A Good Mother Can Need Space — Becoming With Purpose

Becoming With Purpose Journal

Motherhood can fill every available corner of a day while quietly teaching a woman that any desire for space is selfish. But a mother is still a whole person with a body, mind, identity, and limits.

Needing space does not make you less loving. It makes you human.

Space supports presence

Rest and solitude are not rewards reserved for after every task is complete. They help restore the patience and attention that caregiving consumes. Space can mean ten uninterrupted minutes, a walk, an appointment kept, shared household labor, or a recurring block of time that belongs to you.

Guilt is not the same as wrongdoing

Maternal guilt often appears when expectations are impossible, not when a mother has failed. You can care deeply and still feel touched out, tired, ambitious, bored, or in need of help. Honest limits model something valuable: love does not require disappearance.

A small practice for today

Claim one specific pocket of space this week. Name what support would make it possible and ask directly rather than hoping someone notices.

Pause and reflect

  • What kind of space would restore me most?
  • Which expectation makes rest feel undeserved?
  • Who can share one piece of the load more consistently?
